Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 13×9 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- Cut the French bread into 1-inch cubes and dry in the oven for 5-7 minutes if fresh.
- Remove the sausage from its casings and brown in a skillet over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes.
- Sauté diced onion in olive oil for 2-3 minutes, then add apples and cook until tender.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs with milk, heavy cream, salt, nutmeg, sage, and pepper.
- Layer half of the dried bread cubes in the baking dish, followed by half of the sausage and vegetable mixture, and repeat.
- Pour the custard mixture over the layers and gently mix in shredded cheese. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes until the top is golden brown and a knife comes out clean.
