Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 2 slices Whole Wheat Bread Feel free to swap for gluten-free bread if needed.
  • 2 tablespoons Apple Butter Homemade versions offer deeper flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Chopped Fresh Sage Dried sage works well too, or skip it for simplicity.
  • 4 ounces Sharp Cheddar Cheese White cheddar or gouda can add delightful variations.
  • 1 medium Firm Tart Apple (e.g., Granny Smith, Fuji) Any tart apple will enhance the dish.
  • 4 ounces Turkey Meat Feel free to use leftover turkey or deli slices.
  • 1 tablespoon Light Butter Spread Any butter or oil will prevent sticking.

Equipment

  • Nonstick skillet
  • Panini press (optional)

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat for about 3 minutes, or preheat a panini press to medium-high.
  2. Spread 2 tablespoons of apple butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Assemble the sandwich by layering sage, cheddar cheese, apple slices, and turkey on one slice of bread, then top with another slice of bread.
  4. Butter the outer sides of each assembled sandwich with light butter spread.
  5. Grill the sandwiches in the skillet or panini press for 2 to 4 minutes on each side until golden-brown and the cheese melts.
  6. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Keep your grill on medium to low heat for best results. Freshly grated cheese yields a creamier texture. Don't overcrowd the pan for even cooking.
