  • 2-3 pieces Granny Smith apples Adds tartness
For the Topping
  • 4 tablespoons Caster sugar Can substitute with granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground mixed spice Can use cinnamon and nutmeg blend
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla bean paste Substitute with vanilla extract if needed
  • 1 piece Lemon zest Brightens flavors
  • 100 g Butter Cold and diced for better texture
  • 150 g Plain flour Provides structure
  • 80 g Rolled oats Quick oats are acceptable

  • 50 g Chopped nuts Walnuts or almonds

Method
 

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C/Gas 6) and grease a 27 × 23 cm baking dish.
  2. Layer 1 kg of frozen fruit in the greased baking dish, and chop 2–3 Granny Smith apples and add them on top.
  3. Sprinkle 4 tablespoons of caster sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground mixed spice, and lemon zest over the fruit. Drizzle with 2 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste.
  4. In a bowl, combine 150g of plain flour, 4 tablespoons of caster sugar, and 100g of cold, diced butter. Mix until it resembles coarse crumbs and fold in 80g of rolled oats.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the prepared fruit layer.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.
  7. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving warm, ideally with ice cream or custard.
