Ingredients

For the Stuffing Base
  • 3/4 cup Unsalted Butter Provides richness and flavor; margarine is a good substitute
  • 1 loaf Day-Old White French Bread Ensure it’s dried out to prevent mushiness
  • 1 large Sweet Vidalia or Yellow Onion Can be replaced with shallots for a milder flavor
  • 2 stalks Celery Adds a delightful crunch; leeks can be used for a different taste
For the Herbs
  • 1/4 cup Italian Flat-Leaf Parsley Swap with thyme if desired
  • 8 leaves Fresh Sage Leaves Essential for traditional flavor; omit for milder profile
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Rosemary Dried rosemary works as a substitute
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme Can be replaced with dried thyme
For the Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust based on the broth's saltiness
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper Freshly ground is always better
For Binding
  • 2 cups Low-Sodium Chicken Broth Vegetable broth works well for a vegetarian option
  • 2 Large Eggs Binds the mixture together while adding moisture

Equipment

  • Oven
  • baking dish
  • skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • spatula
  • baking sheet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Spread the cubed bread on a baking sheet and place in the oven for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sogginess.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and celery, and sauté for about 10 minutes until soft and lightly browned.
  3. Transfer the sautéed mixture into a mixing bowl. Add bread cubes, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, and broth. Stir gently until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining broth and eggs. Pour over the stuffing mixture and fold gently to combine.
  5. Lightly grease a baking dish and pour the stuffing mixture into it, spreading evenly. Dot the top with butter and cover with foil.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes, then remove foil and continue to bake for another 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Allow the stuffing to cool slightly before serving warm.
