Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Baked Ziti
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and position the rack in the center.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the ziti pasta, and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. In a large pot over medium-high heat, add Italian sausage, diced onion, and garlic. Cook for about 8 minutes until browned.
  4. Stir in marinara and tomato sauce, sea salt, Italian seasoning, and heavy cream. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine drained ziti with the sauce mixture and 1½ cups of shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Pour the ziti mixture into the prepared baking dish, arrange slices of fresh mozzarella on top, followed by the remaining shredded mozzarella.
  7. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top, and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes to cool slightly. Serve with a sprinkle of red chili flakes and minced basil.
